I only ever drove past The Blundell Arms. It's very near where I live, so I drive past it a lot! It just looked like another pub, and not very popular, as I never saw anyone parked outside. But in recent times I noticed A-boards outside mentioning food, so after a long time of realising this, I decided to look online, and lo and behold, it's not just a pub that has "food available", but a full on food-centric pub! Hoorah!

When I drove there, I realised that the reason it looked so quiet and lacking in cars is because there's actually a sizeable car park BEHIND it, and that in turn is the entrance people tend to use to access it.

When I walked in, I was very pleasantly surprised, this pub was not only very expansive in side (perhaps not in terms of headroom in some of the older parts!) but was wonderfully traditional, with beautiful rustic beams running throughout, and many nods to its past as a court house, showing the old stone placard, and a window showing the traditional wattle and daub construction.

The other thing I noticed is that this was a very bright space. The winter sunshine truly cascades through the windows, giving a wonderfully comfortable feeling. This place had a 'good' feeling as soon as I entered.

I was greeted by a friendly staff member who took me to a table nestled amongst the rustic beams, where I was given the menus, and had chance to also peruse the lunch menu. The lunch menu was really good value, and I'd happily order from it, but in this instance I noticed on the main menu, amongst all the delicious traditional and classic pub food offerings, and "chef's inspired dishes"  was a gourmet burger. So I opted for that!

I took the time waiting to have a look round at the rest of the place, which is where Ashleigh, the staff member, told me about the building's previous uses, and how pleasant the place looks at night with all the lights lighting up the corners of this old building.

When my burger arrived, I was quite pleased. The presentation was simple but that's all it needed to be, as it was a big burger, and a pot of triple-cooked chips. The chips were great, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The burger was tasty, but I wouldn't call it 'gourmet', as it was quite a standard burger, but grilled fully through rather than pink (due to health and safety demands usually), so it wasn't juicy, but was still tasty, regardless. The bacon on the burger was a bit fatty though, I had to pull strands of it off, but that's merely my personal preference. For the price, it was a good burger, and a tasty lunch. I'd certainly order it again.

All in all, I was pleased I came to The Blundell Arms! I didn't realise it was such a lovely building, and didn't realise they had such a large offering to eat, so I'll definitely be back to try some more of the menu, especially the dessert menu... there were a few things on there I very much liked the look of, but as the burger was so filling, I didn't quite have the room. Maybe next time I'll go for the lunch menu instead of my eyes being bigger than my belly!

Next time, Blundell.... NEXT TIME!!!

The Blundell Arms

I only ever drove past The Blundell Arms . It's very near where I live, so I drive past it a lot! It just looked like another pub, an...
After a rather disastrous stint as retail blackhole The Triangle, The Corn Exchange has reverted back to its old name, and now plays host to several quality restaurants nestled around its walls, including The Cosy Club, which I'd only heard about, but in passing thought I would give a try, after the menu outside proved tempting, and the idea of it being a casual lounge type affair.

At first I was a bit flummoxed, as I walked to the door outside and went to pull the handle, but it was locked, so I went inside the main Corn Exchange, and could see the restaurant on the first floor, complete with patrons, so I knew it was open, but not how to get up there! So I went back outside, and saw someone come out of the restaurant by attempting to push the locked door, then pulled the one next to it... so I followed suit and pushed it and headed inside, feeling a bit sheepish.

The funny thing is that as soon as you step in, the décor IS decidedly "cosy", flock wallpaper, old framed artwork and tassled lampshades and various curios surround a staircase leading upstairs (there's a lift too).

Walking into the main bar area was wonderful, as the theming continued, opening up into a large domed area with a bar and lots of seating, the wood panelled walls full of old framed portraits and stuffed and mounted deer, all the way up to the ceiling. The best description I could give to this theme was that of a Colonial hunting lodge or an old gentlemen's club. It felt very classy but also very comfortable.

This is the sort of theming I love, and if I'm honest it reminds me a little of The Adventurer's Club at Walt Disney World, and believe me that's a good thing! I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who introduced herself as Stef, and asked where I'd like to sit. As it was quiet it seems that the main bar is used as the restaurant, as the restaurant section itself is sprawling, with a huge amount of additional seating, continuing with the theming throughout.

I chose to sit by the balcony, which gave some great opportunity to people watch over the rest of the interior of the Corn Exchange. I noticed there was a Connect Four game on my table, and although I moved it, Stef told me how they have board games and the such if anyone fancies playing (and later I saw a group of three Korean diners thoroughly enjoying Connect Four, and laughing). She left me with the food and drink menus and said she'd be back.

I was really pleased to see that the drinks list had a good range for those of us who don't drink, not just the usual Coke/Fanta/Lemonade options. The item that really caught my eye was Watermelon Iced Tea, so I ordered one!

It was fabulous! Really tangy and delicious, it made your eye twitch, and was made by a genuine man with a genuine beard at the genuine bar, it wasn't from a bottle. Lovely! I would get this again without question, although Stef also recommended next time I try a berry concoction which is also proving popular.

The menu is full of delicious temptations, from an extensive brunch menu, to sandwiches. panini, burgers and tapas. The puddings look pretty damn good too. Next time I think I'll try the game stew from the mains menu. It's a sign you've enjoyed a place when you find yourself already planning your choices for next time!

However, this time I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken, which came with chipotle mayo, house slaw, and triple cooked chips, and for less than a tenner at that. Stef also said it was no problem to replace the chipotle mayo with standard mayo, as I'm a big girl's blouse and don't like spice very much.

When my food came out, I'm glad I didn't opt for any side dishes as this was a big portion! I was pleased to see that for 'fried chicken'. it was actually not battered but instead coated in a wonderfully crunchy breadcrumb, and gigantic in size, taking up over half the plate. It reminded me more of a schnitzel, but either way it was delicious, juicy and tasty.

It sat on top of a portion of triple cooked chips. Now if you've been to restaurants in the past few years, you'll see that everyone and his grandma claim to offer "triple cooked chips",, but they rarely are, or if they are, they're really not very good quality. HOWEVER, Cosy Club have real genuine triple cooked chips, wonderfully fluffy inside with a good crunchy and crispy exterior. Perfect! Somewhere that really DOES do triple cooked chips, and does them properly!

The house slaw was nice, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist and prefer it with a mayonnaise rather than a dressing, but it was still good, with lots of flavour.

I'm also ashamed to say that I didn't manage to finish! It was delicious but the portion was such a great size that as much as my heart and tastebuds wanted to continue, my body just couldn't comply! Stef showed mock disappointment that I couldn't indulge in a dessert, but was glad I enjoyed my meal.

Before paying, I went to have a look around the expansive restaurant section, where I found lots more tables, but also some quiet and private area with armchairs and sofas, which again felt wonderfully cosy. I also found the beautiful glazed tile staircase leading down to the toilets.

I paid for my food at the bar, and spoke to some other staff members, including the man with the beard who I informed was a dead ringer for one of the portraits on the wall (if it included hipster glasses!). They were friendly and told me how the theming was achieved, treasured they'd found, and how the group of 5 mounted deer heads over the bar were affectionately referred to as One Direction.. They also told me that the glazed tiles on the staircase are pre-war, and from the glory days of the Corn Exchange itself. They work perfectly with the theming of the Cosy Club, that's for sure.

Now here's the best bit.

I had a giant freshly made buttermilk chicken schnitzel type thing with big fluffy triple cooked chips and a hand crafted cocktail... and it was less than £14! For the quality of the food and drink, the friendly and professional service, and the wonderful surroundings to relax in, I think that is really good value!

I will definitely be coming here again. I've already picked what I want! I know lots of folks who will enjoy it here, and even if I'm not looking for dinner, you can pop in here just for an afternoon tipple, or a pot of tea and a relax with your friends. It's so nice to see a new restaurant in the city centre which is not only high quality, but which goes out of its way to make the focus on comfort, relaxing, lounging, and passing the time in a genteel setting from yesteryear.

I know I'm gushing a bit, but I really enjoyed Cosy Club. Bravo!

After a rather disastrous stint as retail blackhole The Triangle, The Corn Exchange has reverted back to its old name, and now plays host...

I fancied lunch one day, but wasn't sure where to go, so when I looked on TripAdvisor, the most popular rated place in Bolton right now is The Bank, which surprised me as I actually hadn't heard of it at this point!

So along I toddled, parked up nearby, and found the place which at first glance just looks like a "café", but trust me, it's really not, it's a fab restaurant which I never knew about, right on my doorstep here in Bolton!

We were warmly greeted by the owner, who tell us about the history of the place (it was actually a bank!), the potential plans and decoration ideas, and how the venue is still a work in concept, with a bright future. It's always nice to meet someone passionate about their business, and giving good customer service. The venue itself is in simple monochromatic colours with clean lines and modern artwork, but with a traditional chandelier in the centre, which contrasts nicely.

We ordered a classic cheeseburger and a gammon dinner. Both were cooked freshly to order, which is always a nice thing to experience in this day and age. The burger was juicy, in a glazed brioche bun, and the gammon was, to quote my dining partner, "the best gammon I've ever had!" (I'll agree, it melted in the mouth!), with perfect eggs... but for me the best was the chips! Gigantic triple-cooked crispy crunchy batons of loveliness! Some of the best chips I've had, with a real crunch to them, unlike some places that claim to triple-cook chips! I'd go here again just for the chips, quite honestly!

After an enjoyable and filling main course, we decided to take a breather so that we could order dessert! It seemed like a shame to skip dessert after such an enjoyable meal! After mulling over the dessert menu, my partner went for the home made apple pie with custard, whilst I opted for the more intriguing "love in a cup".

The desserts were good! As though they wouldn't be! The 'Love in a Cup' turned out to be a very very chocolatey cake in a teacup, with fresh cream on top, very tasty, and perfect for the chocoholics out there! I even experimented by pouring some of the custard onto it to mellow it out a little, and that worked just as well! My partner and I decided it should be renamed, the "Oh My God That's Chocolatey!".

Overall, The Bank is offering superb food for extremely reasonable prices. I'll be there again, and recommend you give it a go sometime if you fancy somewhere where simple food is done very well indeed!

Curley's Fisheries has always had a café. It started off as a shed, then a slightly bigger shed, then a portakabin type shed, and then now it has reached the peak of its evolution in a newly built but beautifully complementing building which now contains Curley's Dining Rooms. The café always had loyal regulars, and always achieved good customer service, and word was spread far and wide about their great quality food, but with the opening of a very modern and stylish new airy and spacious dining room, offering traditional favourites as well as a great evening menu, and beer and wines from Bank Top Brewery, it's attracting new customers from far and wide, eager to see the changes, or try the new food they've heard so much about.

The dining room itself is a lovely open space with modern dark furniture and reclaimed church pews, with features including a large coal-burning open fireplace (amazing in the winter when accompanied by the under-tile heating!) and a baby grand piano, which is frequently played by a pianist, to accompany your meal. The windows facing water-side all open fully concertina-style allowing a semi al-fresco feel in the warmer summer months, and offering some beautiful views right the way to the Fylde coast. On a clear day, you can even see Blackpool TowerI love the way the menu is presented as the "Daily Catch" newspaper, telling the story of how the café started and developed, along with photos, and then inside the menu is designed in a similar newspaper style. The menu offers a great variety of fish dishes as well as classic favourites, salads, hot and cold drinks, snacks, and desserts, all of which I'm happy to say are at pretty decent prices considering the quality of the offerings! The fish has a perfectly crisp batter, and lovely fresh hot chips, accompanied by a wonderful home-made tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. The fish is presented on a gigantic fish-shaped plate, which as well as perfectly containing the very large fish offered, is a fantastically theatrical statement when it arrives.

I ordered the prime cod, which although my photo does it no justice, was colossal! There was a menu option for an 'extra large cod', which considering the size of the standard cod, must require the concertina windows to be opened to get it into the dining room, surely! As you can imagine, after this beast, I couldn't manage a dessert, but the cake cabinet at the front of the dining room only taunted me that I wouldn't be able to try what looked like some very tasty cakes! Bank Top Brewery providing the beer and wine means that if you don't quite fancy traditional chippy fare, you can still have a tasty and well prepared meal, and a pleasant evening, and equally if you wanted to simply pop in during the daytime for a slice of cake and a cup of tea, you'd get just as pleasant experience.

I'm making myself hungry simply remembering this visit. I really must visit again soon!

The Rivington Pub & Grill (formerly The Ridgeway Arms) in Blackrod is a warm, cosy, and comfortable traditional English pub, with a large focus on dining.

If you enter the Rivington from the car park, you would firstly think that you've walked into a the bar of a pleasant restaurant, complete with leather winged armchairs, candles, and historical photos of the area. If you walked into the Rivington from the other entrance, you would think that you've walked into a traditional and friendly pub, complete with a roaring fireplace, wood panelling, and comfortable chairs. Fortunately, both are true. Whether you're there for a pint, or there for your dinner, the warm and pleasantly decorated and furnished surroundings automatically make you feel relaxed and comfortable.

BBQ Saddleback Ribs
The main dining area for the restaurant side of the pub is in a horseshoe shape, with open fireplaces on each end, and a raised seating area in the centre. The food offered has something for everyone, ranging from the traditional to the modern, but done superbly well, and in good portions. The head waiter told us how nothing is ever frozen, and everything is bought and created freshly, hence sometimes there can be a wait for your food, but frankly if you want good food created fresh, you should anticipate a bit of a wait. It only makes sense
Camembert cheese in filo pastry
Bruschetta, with home-made bread

Of the above starters, I had the Saddleback Ribs, which were in a delicious BBQ sauce, which was very much a home made sauce, rather than the thick ketchup-like BBQ sauce you seem to find everywhere today. The meat was so tender, that I was able to simply lift it up, and the bone fell out! Very tasty indeed!

The serving staff here are friendly and helpful, but for many of them it seems English is not their first language. This isn't a criticism as much as an observation, and a note that a few times we had to say things a couple of times before they understood, as we were often asked "sorry, what was that?". My only criticism might be a one off, as we asked the head waiter for our bill, but it didn't arrive, and after 15 minutes we asked another waiter about it, but as we did so, we saw the head waiter walk in, see us, and have a moment of realisation, before he dashed off to the bar to collect our bill. Everyone forgets something now and then, but as soon as he realised, he was on it!

Although there are many vegetarian dishes available, I do have to say that the Rivington's forté is their meat! All of their steaks are dry aged for 32 days hung on the bone, and all of their beef is from traditional breed cattle. My personal favourite dish here is the rare breed minute flash-steak, which is tender, juicy, and full of flavour (as were my dining companions' above dishes too!). My flash steak came a specific way, but for other meats you are asked how you want it cooked, and obviously which sauces and accompaniments you would like. Steaks cooked without a sauce get lightly drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. I personally love their chips! Big, chunky, old fashioned chips. Proper comfort food!

Herdwick lamb chops
You see the photo of the Herdwick lamb chops here on the left? I feel I must point out that when asked what he thought of them, my father-in-law, who is a very difficult man to impress, declared them "excellent!", which frankly blew the rest of us away (my mother-in-law dropped her fork!). This is an old fashioned man who would usually say something was "not bad" or at most "not bad at all!", but to declare a food 'excellent' is something we've not heard before... so that's saying something!

They offer a nice selection of after-dinner goodies, from teas and coffees to after-dinner tipples, but as beautiful as their desserts sound, I have yet only ever had their sticky toffee pudding, which is home-made and very light (not stodgy and heavy like you'd imagine) and served with vanilla icecream and butterscotch sauce (my favourite!). It's not that I don't want to try their other desserts, but I can't resist their sticky toffee pudding whenever I'm given the choice!! Frankly I should go there one day and JUST have a couple of desserts!

The Rivington Pub and Grill is superb basically, and if you've only ever been there when it was The Ridgeway, I emplore you to go along and give it a try! Maybe have one of their amazing sunday roast dinners. It's the sort of place you could go as a couple, with friends, your parents, or even the whole family. It's a good example of a traditional English dining pub done right! I look forward to my next visit.
