After a rather disastrous stint as retail blackhole The Triangle, The Corn Exchange has reverted back to its old name, and now plays host to several quality restaurants nestled around its walls, including The Cosy Club, which I'd only heard about, but in passing thought I would give a try, after the menu outside proved tempting, and the idea of it being a casual lounge type affair.

At first I was a bit flummoxed, as I walked to the door outside and went to pull the handle, but it was locked, so I went inside the main Corn Exchange, and could see the restaurant on the first floor, complete with patrons, so I knew it was open, but not how to get up there! So I went back outside, and saw someone come out of the restaurant by attempting to push the locked door, then pulled the one next to it... so I followed suit and pushed it and headed inside, feeling a bit sheepish.

The funny thing is that as soon as you step in, the décor IS decidedly "cosy", flock wallpaper, old framed artwork and tassled lampshades and various curios surround a staircase leading upstairs (there's a lift too).

Walking into the main bar area was wonderful, as the theming continued, opening up into a large domed area with a bar and lots of seating, the wood panelled walls full of old framed portraits and stuffed and mounted deer, all the way up to the ceiling. The best description I could give to this theme was that of a Colonial hunting lodge or an old gentlemen's club. It felt very classy but also very comfortable.

This is the sort of theming I love, and if I'm honest it reminds me a little of The Adventurer's Club at Walt Disney World, and believe me that's a good thing! I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who introduced herself as Stef, and asked where I'd like to sit. As it was quiet it seems that the main bar is used as the restaurant, as the restaurant section itself is sprawling, with a huge amount of additional seating, continuing with the theming throughout.

I chose to sit by the balcony, which gave some great opportunity to people watch over the rest of the interior of the Corn Exchange. I noticed there was a Connect Four game on my table, and although I moved it, Stef told me how they have board games and the such if anyone fancies playing (and later I saw a group of three Korean diners thoroughly enjoying Connect Four, and laughing). She left me with the food and drink menus and said she'd be back.

I was really pleased to see that the drinks list had a good range for those of us who don't drink, not just the usual Coke/Fanta/Lemonade options. The item that really caught my eye was Watermelon Iced Tea, so I ordered one!

It was fabulous! Really tangy and delicious, it made your eye twitch, and was made by a genuine man with a genuine beard at the genuine bar, it wasn't from a bottle. Lovely! I would get this again without question, although Stef also recommended next time I try a berry concoction which is also proving popular.

The menu is full of delicious temptations, from an extensive brunch menu, to sandwiches. panini, burgers and tapas. The puddings look pretty damn good too. Next time I think I'll try the game stew from the mains menu. It's a sign you've enjoyed a place when you find yourself already planning your choices for next time!

However, this time I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken, which came with chipotle mayo, house slaw, and triple cooked chips, and for less than a tenner at that. Stef also said it was no problem to replace the chipotle mayo with standard mayo, as I'm a big girl's blouse and don't like spice very much.

When my food came out, I'm glad I didn't opt for any side dishes as this was a big portion! I was pleased to see that for 'fried chicken'. it was actually not battered but instead coated in a wonderfully crunchy breadcrumb, and gigantic in size, taking up over half the plate. It reminded me more of a schnitzel, but either way it was delicious, juicy and tasty.

It sat on top of a portion of triple cooked chips. Now if you've been to restaurants in the past few years, you'll see that everyone and his grandma claim to offer "triple cooked chips",, but they rarely are, or if they are, they're really not very good quality. HOWEVER, Cosy Club have real genuine triple cooked chips, wonderfully fluffy inside with a good crunchy and crispy exterior. Perfect! Somewhere that really DOES do triple cooked chips, and does them properly!

The house slaw was nice, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist and prefer it with a mayonnaise rather than a dressing, but it was still good, with lots of flavour.

I'm also ashamed to say that I didn't manage to finish! It was delicious but the portion was such a great size that as much as my heart and tastebuds wanted to continue, my body just couldn't comply! Stef showed mock disappointment that I couldn't indulge in a dessert, but was glad I enjoyed my meal.

Before paying, I went to have a look around the expansive restaurant section, where I found lots more tables, but also some quiet and private area with armchairs and sofas, which again felt wonderfully cosy. I also found the beautiful glazed tile staircase leading down to the toilets.

I paid for my food at the bar, and spoke to some other staff members, including the man with the beard who I informed was a dead ringer for one of the portraits on the wall (if it included hipster glasses!). They were friendly and told me how the theming was achieved, treasured they'd found, and how the group of 5 mounted deer heads over the bar were affectionately referred to as One Direction.. They also told me that the glazed tiles on the staircase are pre-war, and from the glory days of the Corn Exchange itself. They work perfectly with the theming of the Cosy Club, that's for sure.

Now here's the best bit.

I had a giant freshly made buttermilk chicken schnitzel type thing with big fluffy triple cooked chips and a hand crafted cocktail... and it was less than £14! For the quality of the food and drink, the friendly and professional service, and the wonderful surroundings to relax in, I think that is really good value!

I will definitely be coming here again. I've already picked what I want! I know lots of folks who will enjoy it here, and even if I'm not looking for dinner, you can pop in here just for an afternoon tipple, or a pot of tea and a relax with your friends. It's so nice to see a new restaurant in the city centre which is not only high quality, but which goes out of its way to make the focus on comfort, relaxing, lounging, and passing the time in a genteel setting from yesteryear.

I know I'm gushing a bit, but I really enjoyed Cosy Club. Bravo!

After a rather disastrous stint as retail blackhole The Triangle, The Corn Exchange has reverted back to its old name, and now plays host...

Filthy Cow is the new baby on the block when it comes to the  big filthy burgers that Manchester City Centre has taken to their hearts, as it's only been open for three months, but in that time it is becoming extremely popular, and the owner is seeing the success and popularity rate continuing to soar!

Why, you ask? Because the food is $#!@ing amazing, and for Manchester City Centre it's very reasonably prices considering the quality of food you get!

Sorry, I'm getting a bit over excited! Let me pull back a little first.

Filthy Cow sits down one of the side-streets near the town hall, and as you step inside, you see the décor is the popular industrial and brutalist style that is popular with the hipster crowd in modern city restaurants lately, but the brick walls and raw plaster walls, graffiti, chains and metalwork really seems to work for Filthy Cow because it goes with the filthy raw naughty feel of the place, which takes its fabulously pervy meaty double-entendres as far as possible. I like it.

The staff are friendly and professional, and I was greeted by who I believe was the owner as I walked in, who welcomed me and asked if I'd been before. It's always nice to be acknowledged when you enter a restaurant.

The menu is refreshingly simple, with half a dozen burgers, a few sides, drinks, and some ice creams and shakes provided by the fabulous Ginger's Comfort Emporium over in Affleck's. There's something nice about a simpler menu like this, as you know that they are focussing on their core dishes being as good as possible, and easy to take in.

I ordered a Filthy Cheese burger without lettuce, some fries, and a Coke. This came to just £10.50, which for freshly made-to-order food in a modern and new restaurant bang smack in the middle of the city centre is remarkably good value, especially compared to some similar offerings over in the Northern Quarter.

Food is presented in a classic American no-frills style with a wrapped burger and fries, and napkins bearing the filthy plea of "rub your greasy fingers all over me!". It was nice to see that the stickers on the burger clarify the burger type and any special requirements (like me not wanting lettuce), as it saves that pain when you're in a group of unwrapping burgers and lifting the lid to work out who has what burger. I was also informed that the burger would be a bit pink in the middle... GOOD! That's my preference! Too many places provide brown "well-done" burgers which are alright, but nothing special compared to a good medium rare burger or steak.

They say you eat with your eyes, and unwrapping that burger certainly played on that. I see why the filthy cow idea is in play now, as this was food porn of the highest degree, and I hadn't even tasted it yet!

I did that cursory thing of trying a fry or two first, pretending to myself that I wasn't going to just shove my face into that juicy burger straight away. The fries were excellent! I must admit that at first glance I thought, "oh these are bog standard chips", but no, they were hot, crisp and tasty, and seasoned in a delicious rosemary salt, which really gave them some tasty flavour!

Now... that burger... as I sunk my teeth into the soft juicy meat, I coudln't help but close my eyes and let out a little quiet whimper at how absolutely stunning this burger was. Soft, tender, PERFECTLY pink and unbelievably juicy... I am not afraid to say that this is one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life, and it wasn't even seven quid! The brioche bun beautifully soaked up some of those tasty meat juices and the fabulously melting cheese, the culmination of all the elements coming together to form what a burger SHOULD be but so often isn't anymore.

No it's not a gigantic tall stacked burger slathered in all sorts of sauces and toppings and flags and with a knife in it and sparklers and a rocket and all the other gimmicks a lot of modern burger places go for now, but it does burgers as they SHOULD be... simple, tasty, well made, and pure comfort food... pure filth! FILTH!

I highly recommend this place to anyone in the city centre who fancies a really good filthy lunch at a surprisingly decent price.

Well done Filthy Cow, I had my doubts given the big burger joint trend in Manchester right now, but you truly wowed me, and I will without the slightest bit of doubt be visiting you whenever I get chance when I'm in the city centre! I can't stop telling my friends, colleagues and family about you, and showing them those illicit photos of the food on my phone! Bravo!

Cane & Grain only opened recently in Manchester's trendy Northern Quarter, and billed itself from the beginning as being a bar and rib joint, spread over several floors, including a tiki lounge.

I decided to pop in for lunch one day whilst I was in the city, and was pleased to see there were some tasty and very affordable lunchtime offers available, so I wandered inside.

The décor is that modern-hipster style of rough-and-ready, distressed paint and textures etc, but still spacious and colourful with art on the walls. Also it's not really related, but I love their logo!

From the lunchmenu I ordered the rib-roll and fries, which I thought for £5 was very well priced! I also ordered a lemon-lime Ting (£2 a can, but hey you can't win them all), which was perfect for the sunny hot day, which also prompted me to sit outside in their outdoor seating area, and people watch... which in the Northern Quarter is a bit more interesting than in the rest of the city!

The staff are young, friendly, and professional, which is pleasant and welcoming to those of us who might otherwise feel a little out-of-place in modern and dare I say "hip" places. Yes I said hip. Shut up.

My food arrived looking delicious, and served on a metal tray and with a metal mug of fries (hipster places don't like plates). The pork roll was succulent and tasty, served with red onions and gherkin slices. The fries were seasoned absolutely perfectly, with "tiki salt" according to one of the staff. They were hot, crisp, and very tasty indeed!

I only popped here for lunch during the day, and I imagine when it's busy at night and the cocktails are flowing in the Liars Lounge it may have an atmosphere different altogether, but I think it's one I'd be quite happy to check out sometime, as this came across as a friendly and good quality venue which I can imagine hanging out in with my friends.

I'll definitely be back for that fabulous lunch deal again! 7 quid for a large freshly made pork roll with seasoned fresh fries and a drink in the city centre is a steal!

I fancied lunch one day, but wasn't sure where to go, so when I looked on TripAdvisor, the most popular rated place in Bolton right now is The Bank, which surprised me as I actually hadn't heard of it at this point!

So along I toddled, parked up nearby, and found the place which at first glance just looks like a "café", but trust me, it's really not, it's a fab restaurant which I never knew about, right on my doorstep here in Bolton!

We were warmly greeted by the owner, who tell us about the history of the place (it was actually a bank!), the potential plans and decoration ideas, and how the venue is still a work in concept, with a bright future. It's always nice to meet someone passionate about their business, and giving good customer service. The venue itself is in simple monochromatic colours with clean lines and modern artwork, but with a traditional chandelier in the centre, which contrasts nicely.

We ordered a classic cheeseburger and a gammon dinner. Both were cooked freshly to order, which is always a nice thing to experience in this day and age. The burger was juicy, in a glazed brioche bun, and the gammon was, to quote my dining partner, "the best gammon I've ever had!" (I'll agree, it melted in the mouth!), with perfect eggs... but for me the best was the chips! Gigantic triple-cooked crispy crunchy batons of loveliness! Some of the best chips I've had, with a real crunch to them, unlike some places that claim to triple-cook chips! I'd go here again just for the chips, quite honestly!

After an enjoyable and filling main course, we decided to take a breather so that we could order dessert! It seemed like a shame to skip dessert after such an enjoyable meal! After mulling over the dessert menu, my partner went for the home made apple pie with custard, whilst I opted for the more intriguing "love in a cup".

The desserts were good! As though they wouldn't be! The 'Love in a Cup' turned out to be a very very chocolatey cake in a teacup, with fresh cream on top, very tasty, and perfect for the chocoholics out there! I even experimented by pouring some of the custard onto it to mellow it out a little, and that worked just as well! My partner and I decided it should be renamed, the "Oh My God That's Chocolatey!".

Overall, The Bank is offering superb food for extremely reasonable prices. I'll be there again, and recommend you give it a go sometime if you fancy somewhere where simple food is done very well indeed!

Handmade Burger Co. is a chain of 20 restaurants around the country, primarily in the North. Their ethos is big on fresh and hand made, from their burgers to their buns to their chips, so although I dine in chain restaurants, I don't usually blog about them, but this time I made an exception when I decided to visit their newest restaurant in Spinningfields in Manchester, with a few friends.

The venue was nicely laid out, bright, and spacious, but I'm still not sold on the gritty/industrial/rough-and-ready thing that so many burger places have going for them lately. This place's stripped floors, bare sanded walls, and thinly one-coated painted chimney breasts etc didn't really do it for me. In the entryway and at the kitchen there are lovely old fashioned brick-set glazed tiles and green decorative glazed trim. This throughout would've looked really nice. It's also fair to point out that the toilets were nicely decorated and appointed. There are two toilets, both are unisex, and each is its own self-contained room, complete with sink and hand-dryer etc.

The staff were fab! Friendly and knowledgeable, and giving a good service all round! Everyone from the servers to the smiling chefs in the kitchen were all young, enthusiastic, and full of energy.

Before we joined our friends, my partner and I had ordered milkshake each (he had butterscotch, I had strawberry), and we both agreed they were superb, and we enjoyed them thoroughly! They cooled us down after quite a clammy day, and were thick, cold, and loaded with enough ice cream to give me an ice cream head ache (but it was totally worth it!)

Now for the food. The first thing you'll really notice as you open the menus is that there is an overwhelming amount of choice, with over 40 burgers, as well as other foods, sides, desserts etc. I enjoyed that there was a good range, but I think the menu could easily be pared down a bit to say 10 really good burgers, so that the choice is a bit easier than having to carefully read three pages before you decide.

The rather overwhelming menu

The food was good on the whole, but to me it varied. I ordered the classic cheese burger, which for a grilled burger was really juicy and tasty, but the burger bun itself was quite starchy and it started to fall apart quite quickly, something I noticed with my friends' burgers too! My partner ordered his smoky chicken burger in a pitta, which the staff were happy to do, and which he said tasted lovely. The sides however were only ok... the corn was great, the chips were poor (tasted like chippy chips that had gone cold and been reheated in a fryer), which was a shame as their menu gushes about their quality of their chips, and our onion rings never turned up, but we tried some of our friends onion rings instead. Not bad but quite batter tasting, but I'd certainly order them again.

Tell me those don't look like chippy chips

It's surprisingly hard to take a good shot of a burger!

The drinks were good too, with options from beer and wine, to Fentimans soft drinks, Rekorderlig flavoured ciders, milkshakes, and standard soda fountain drinks.

For me the other highlight was the desserts, which were delicious! Big tasty sundaes! Our group tried a chocolate one and a lemon meringue one, the latter being my favourite, with lemon curd, loads of cream, and lots of delicious crumbly meringue pieces! Yum! I'd come here again just for the desserts!

All in all, I'd visit again, perhaps just for a burger at lunchtime, or on a hot summer's day for one of those lovely big ice cream sundaes! Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area :)
