Max Italia is on Lee Lane in Horwich. It's the source of some confusion at times as it was once an Italian restaurant called Max Max. Since Max Max closed, it reopened as the short lived Siam Balcony, before closing and reopening as the current Italian restaurant with the familiarly named Max Italia, seemingly wanting to hark back to the days of Max Max, and informing the locals of what they're about.

It took me a while to get to Max Italia, as I live very nearby it, but assumed it was the same people behind Max Max, so never really gave it much thought. However on one night we fancied giving it a try, and so called the number to make a booking. Oddly the phone was simply answered with "hello?", leading me to ask "uh... is that Max Italia?"  "yes" ... awkward. But still, we got a table booked, and went along.

When we arrived we realised how busy it was! We were greeted, and seated in a waiting area by the bar with a menu to look at whilst our table was prepared. It only took a couple of minutes before we were seated.

The decor is modern but simple, with clever tricks like stone effect printed wallpaper for texture (I thought it was real stone at first) and large mirrors on one wall to give the space a feeling of more room. Dishes are written across the top of the wall, a la Frankie & Benny's. The tables are simple white linen with red square accent cloths. Classic Italian restaurant with a slight modernisation. No Chianti bottles with melted candles here.. The only thing I thought spoilt the look a bit was plastic fake vines occasionally strewn around lampshades and around windows. It really doesn't need them. The bar area is white tiles, glass blocks, and blue lighting, giving a slight feeling of a swimming baths, but still functional and modern.

The menu has some great classic offerings without going too over the top. It also has several special offers to tempt people into giving them a try. On the night we were visiting, there were two long lines of tables celebrating a retirement, so it was loud but not terrible. We were worried about the time for food to arrive, but they were seemingly finishing their main course as we settled in, so that wouldn't be too much of an issue.

To start we ordered plain garlic bread topped with oregano and Fungo Al Pepe, which is a large mushroom topped with black pudding and blue cheese in a creamy pepper sauce.

The garlic bread, although a nice texture, was quite subtle in terms of garlic. It was however still pleasant, and worked very well dunked in the sauce that came with the Fungo Al Pepe, which in itself seems a little bit Italy-via-Lancashire. I'm not sure if it's a classic dish you'd find in bistros in Firenze, but despite the appearance, it was bubbling when it arrived, and was in itself very tasty and enjoyable.

For our mains we decided on Penne Gratinate, which is penne pasta with onions, mushrooms and peas, in a creamy sauce, topped with cheese and cooked in the oven, and a classic spaghetti carbonara.

These too arrived in pretty good time from the open-fronted kitchen at one end of the restaurant.

Suffice to say, both of these dishes were superb. Fresh, creamy and tasty, they were satisfying right down to the last forkful, and then to the last spoonful as we finished every last bit! The penne gratinate was satisfying and creamy, with wonderful flavours, and the carbonara was fresh and nicely presented.

At this point we could see that the large tables with the retirement party were eyeing up the dessert menus, so we got our order in quickly. We chose a simple vanilla ice cream, and the chocolate profiteroles. Again, both arrived in good time. The ice cream was good, topped in a chocolate sauce, which although nice, I didn't ask for (I'm not usually a fan of chocolate sauce), and the profiteroles were delicious and very chocolatey!

Service was friendly but very busy (presumably due to that retirement party), servers were hard to get hold of at times, especially when we were trying to get the bill, but those who we did speak to and were served by were friendly and polite. As we had trouble getting the bill, we weren't sure whether we would be paying at the table with a card machine, or if it best to head up to the bar. We did the latter to be safe.

We really enjoyed our meals, and although busy, the experience itself was very pleasant. We were flabbergasted that for our entire meal of starters, main courses, desserts and drinks, the bill came to only just over £31! We at first thought perhaps we hadn't been charged for our desserts, but we were told by the friendly barman that it was part of a mid-week offer. Well that's just dandy!

We had a great meal at a local independent restaurant within walking distance, and it didn't even disturb the bank, let alone break it. We recommend it if you're in the Horwich area, and definitely to any locals unsure of whether to give it a try.

I only ever drove past The Blundell Arms. It's very near where I live, so I drive past it a lot! It just looked like another pub, and not very popular, as I never saw anyone parked outside. But in recent times I noticed A-boards outside mentioning food, so after a long time of realising this, I decided to look online, and lo and behold, it's not just a pub that has "food available", but a full on food-centric pub! Hoorah!

When I drove there, I realised that the reason it looked so quiet and lacking in cars is because there's actually a sizeable car park BEHIND it, and that in turn is the entrance people tend to use to access it.

When I walked in, I was very pleasantly surprised, this pub was not only very expansive in side (perhaps not in terms of headroom in some of the older parts!) but was wonderfully traditional, with beautiful rustic beams running throughout, and many nods to its past as a court house, showing the old stone placard, and a window showing the traditional wattle and daub construction.

The other thing I noticed is that this was a very bright space. The winter sunshine truly cascades through the windows, giving a wonderfully comfortable feeling. This place had a 'good' feeling as soon as I entered.

I was greeted by a friendly staff member who took me to a table nestled amongst the rustic beams, where I was given the menus, and had chance to also peruse the lunch menu. The lunch menu was really good value, and I'd happily order from it, but in this instance I noticed on the main menu, amongst all the delicious traditional and classic pub food offerings, and "chef's inspired dishes"  was a gourmet burger. So I opted for that!

I took the time waiting to have a look round at the rest of the place, which is where Ashleigh, the staff member, told me about the building's previous uses, and how pleasant the place looks at night with all the lights lighting up the corners of this old building.

When my burger arrived, I was quite pleased. The presentation was simple but that's all it needed to be, as it was a big burger, and a pot of triple-cooked chips. The chips were great, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The burger was tasty, but I wouldn't call it 'gourmet', as it was quite a standard burger, but grilled fully through rather than pink (due to health and safety demands usually), so it wasn't juicy, but was still tasty, regardless. The bacon on the burger was a bit fatty though, I had to pull strands of it off, but that's merely my personal preference. For the price, it was a good burger, and a tasty lunch. I'd certainly order it again.

All in all, I was pleased I came to The Blundell Arms! I didn't realise it was such a lovely building, and didn't realise they had such a large offering to eat, so I'll definitely be back to try some more of the menu, especially the dessert menu... there were a few things on there I very much liked the look of, but as the burger was so filling, I didn't quite have the room. Maybe next time I'll go for the lunch menu instead of my eyes being bigger than my belly!

Next time, Blundell.... NEXT TIME!!!

Kravings recently opened on Lee Lane in Horwich, and describes itself as a dessert lounge, where you can buy ice creams, ice cream sundaes, ice cream milkshakes, traditional falooda, belgian waffles, cakes, and other delicious goodies, as well as hot and cold drinks, and enjoy them in a relaxed atmosphere.

Speaking to one of the staff, it also seems Kravings has plenty of plans in the pipelines, such as healthy smoothies, new desserts, and eating challenges, meaning all the menus will have to be reprinted, which is a good thing, as some of the descriptions are... odd... I think a translation issue perhaps:

The service is very friendly and welcoming, and the venue itself is bright and modern, and comprises of traditional booth seating, and decoration on the walls created with spray paint. There's also a big TV you can chill out and watch.

I ordered a Cookies and Cream Sundae, and my partner ordered a Honeycomb sundae. Both were freshly prepared for us and brought over to our tables.

The sundaes were really delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my cookies and cream sundae wasn't just cookies and cream ice cream, but also loaded with chopped and crushed cookies throughout! Delicious!

I also ordered a hot tea. For some reason I find a hot cup of tea works really well with a nice cold ice cream sundae. My tea was made perfectly for me and brought over in an irish coffee glass, which was a nice touch of class. My partner also ordered a Bumblebee Milkshake, which was delicious, and brought over by a staff member who placed it on the table whilst making buzzing noises!

I think Kravings will do well in Horwich, it's nice to see somewhere that people (especially young people) can congregate and socialise without it having to be focused on alcohol, and whilst being in a friendly and fun environment. They even do non-alcoholic "mocktails".

Definitely somewhere to go for a bit of fun, and a naughty treat! Be sure to take a selfie with their selfie frame!

But Adam, dubTAP is a new tap room and bottle shop from the guys behind Drink Up Brewing, and you don't drink, so why are you doing a review on dubTAP?

Well I'll tell you why, you little scamp, you! Because I thought the same thing! I thought dubTAP were just a new drinking hole, and so despite the popularity and praises being sung, I didn't visit until recently, because I found out that they also do food, and also serve soft drinks and hot drinks. Hooray!

The venue itself is on Lee Lane in  Horwich, in a former small take-away unit, but despite their small size, they've used the space well, and I'm told have further plans to open the first floor for a more specific dining space, showing that they have every intent to keep the food coming, rather than it being an afterthought at a bar.

As you walk in (mind your head, the doors are low in this place!), the first thing that strikes you is that with the wood cladding on the walls, lamp shades made from reclaimed metal containers, aspace saving seating, and long bar, it feels very much like somewhere you would find in Manchester's Northern Quarter, but slotted into Horwich.

The welcome is warm, and as we walk in we notice a family on the left hand side sharing a table with some parents and their little girl, everyone having breakfast. This is a good sign. At some bars which are just simple boozers, you expect to walk in at 10:30am to simply find middle aged blokes called Frank sat around on their third pint, but dubTAP have realised that you can have a drink based venue, but one that still appeals to families and the non-drinking crowd by offering things like food, Fentimans soft drinks, and tea and coffee.

As I mentioned, there's not a huge amount of seating in the downstairs space, but the best has been made of the space to allow people to sit without chairs and tables cramming all into the space. We sat on a side-bar with stools and read the food menu, which sounds very good, some really nice ideas for simple lunches, such as steak Canadian and black pudding scotch eggs, but today we fancied a bit of breakfast, and so opted for some toast, and the full breakfast, as well as a pot of tea for two.

The tea came promptly, in a funky teapot and Le Creuset mugs, which kept them hot for ages, very nice. Breakfast however on this instance for us was a bit of a miss. We found the food to be a bit greasy and not of the highest quality, and also the toast was burnt, both the toast with the breakfast and the toast I had myself. But this of course is just our opinion, for a lot of people this would be just fine, and a good price. It's certainly on a par with many of the other breakfast offerings in Horwich.

The reviews of the place for drink offerings are nothing short of stellar, and both the food reviews and photos of the general menu are also very complimenting, and look amazing to boot, but I think they've only just started doing breakfasts, and as the place has only been open a very short period, it stands to reason that they are still finding their footing in some regards, so I wouldn't judge the place on this one miss (for us). I think once they've been doing them for a while longer, and they turn the toaster down a bit, they'll be on to a winner.

The service was friendly and efficient, and it was nice to hear the plans for the future of the place, with a bigger focus on dining. And don't worry, dubTAP, even with the breakfast hiccup, I'll definitely be back again to try some of those other dishes on the menu!

What's also nice is that as it's right in the middle of Horwich, there's plenty of free parking on streets and free parking all around the area making it easy to visit.

But clearly, dubTAP is aimed first and foremost at drinking, rather than eating, and for those visiting to try out the alcoholic refreshments on offer, I think you're in for a treat, as there is a massive selection available, from the cans and bottles displayed in the large chiller units opposite the bar, to wine menu, and the blackboard boasting the daily offerings such as "Beelzebub's Tears" and "Big Bertha". How could you resist? Why not give this new local independent a try sometime whilst they're finding their feet instead of going to that chain pub and drinking that same old drink you always have?

Farnells Coffee Lounge and Bar sits on the middle of Chorley New Road. It used to be Julie's International and fancy dress, You've probably seen it when you've been sat in traffic, but have you been in? You should!

It's well located for people to get to on foot, and although it does have a car park, I wouldn't say you could get more than 4 cars in it at any one time. The venue is split into three areas, the coffee lounge to the left, the sandwich shop to the right, and the fully licensed bar/function room upstairs.

As you walk in, you step into the coffee lounge section, which is bright, spacious, and modern, with purchasable art displayed on the walls. There are modern tables and chairs as well as couches if you just fancy a coffee and to read the paper. The owner, Stuart Farnell greets me warmly as I walk in, and asks "fancy a brew?". The main counter displays cakes and tasty goods available at that moment, as well as the selections of beers and wines available.

The food selection is mainly breakfast and lunch-based, with a specials board, and everything seems to be home-made and freshly made to order by Stuart, who also used to be a restaurant chef, and who as well as running the place as a friendly host, also tells me that he runs weekly community cookery classes at the venue, as well as other general events. He tells me how nothing quite beats home-made when it comes to his food offerings, to which I agree. Despite being fresh to order and home-made, the food is pretty reasonably priced too!

I firstly accepted the offer of a pot of tea, which hit the spot perfectly. I liked that the milk came in a teeny tiny traditional milk bottle too. For my lunch I chose to have a ham and cheese toastie, which clearly was freshly made. Not only was the quality very tasty, but it came with a little fresh salad, and the best fresh home-made coleslaw I've had in an extremely long time!

I definitely recommend popping into Farnells for a spot of brunch if you're passing, or if you want to meet up with some friends for a drink, then I think you'll find this place comfortable and pleasant. I certainly plan to return... if anything just for that coleslaw!
